In nature the Blue Winged Olive (BWO) or Ephemerella ignita) is a widely distributed fly found on wild streams and more sedate chalk streams. It is easily recogniseable by its three tails (other olives have only two tails). This is an extremely important flyt pattern. Various species of mayfly throughout the world have the name Blue-Winged Olive applied to them. The Blue Winged Olives range in size from medium to small but all have the same olive coloured body and thorax and smoky wings.
